YAHOO! MOVIES EDITORIAL – WILL CRONENBERG’S ‘COSMOPOLIS’ HELP/HURT ROB’S CAREER?

David Cronenberg has gone from creepy cult favorite director to daring, respected visionary with serious, creepy cult street cred. Robert Pattinson is hoping to transition successfully from sparkly vampire teen heartthrob to serious actor. The two are together bringing “Cosmopolis” to the big screen, by way of Cannes, and hope the seductive and bizarre metaphorical drama will win over audiences and critics alike. Actors’ careers are defined by the choices they make. Will this new role help or hurt Pattinson’s career? Working With the Best Cronenberg’s “Eastern Promises” recently netted “Lord of the Rings” sex symbol Viggo Mortensen an Oscar nomination, so Pattinson isn’t wrong to hope for a little critical love amid the screaming fan girls. “Cosmopolis” is packed with high-caliber costars like Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, and Samantha Morton who aren’t afraid to go to crazy places on screen. Setting yourself up with top-notch talent isn’t a bad way to try to solidify your serious acting chops. Unfortunately, working with the best isn’t always a guarantee; just ask the perennially pretty Orlando Bloom, who worked with big name directors like Ridley Scott and Cameron Crowe as well as respected first-timers like actor Mark Ruffalo. Whatever flaws films like the epic “Kingdom of Heaven” had, the blame from critics and viewers mostly fell on Bloom’s attractive head. If “Cosmopolis” is a convoluted disaster, Pattinson will likely take more of the blame than anyone else, whether he deserves it or not. Going for the Sex A wise move when transitioning from a rabid, vampire-lover audience to more “serious” works of art is to not alienate the fan base that made these new film companies think you were a good box office draw. While “Cosmopolis” is not anywhere near the “Twilight” genre — except perhaps in moody atmosphere — there’s no hiding Pattinson behind monk robes or a shaggy beard. The trailer indicates there will be a lot of bare skin and plenty of steamy sex in his characters’ stretch limo, which ought to drive the actor’s current fans wild and earn him some new ones along the way. But Will Anyone Understand It? The bare bones synopsis for “Cosmopolis” is that it’s about an obscenely rich, self-made man who has a bunch of strange adventures while traveling in his stretch limo across town to get a haircut. Oh yeah, and people are trying to kill him. Throw in a lot of sex, and maybe viewers won’t care to know anything other than that. Watch the trailer, however, and you’re bound to be very confused. Read The New Yorker review of the source material, a book by Don DeLillo, and it’s clear that there’s a lot more going on than just a late night joy ride. Cronenberg’s 1999 film “eXistenZ” tackled virtual reality taken to extremes, but “Cosmopolis” appears more ambitious in its metaphorical take on capitalism and technology, and even the nature of reality. The weird and muddled “eXistenZ” was a large financial flop at the box office, but Pattinson can take heart that it didn’t seem to set star Jude Law back any. Cronenberg has definitely honed his skills over the years, escalating that muddled weirdness into strangely mesmerizing ambiguity. If “Cosmopolis” manages even one or two profound thoughts amid the baser, freaky charms its trailer illustrates, this could be a win-win for Pattinson with both fans and movie critics. ROBERT PATTINSON SPOTTED IN OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA SATURDAY NIGHT

Film star Robert Pattinson autographed a menu at The Majestic Saturday for Eve Armstrong, 13-year-old daughter of Chef Cathal Armstrong. Patrons at The Majestic got a pleasant surprise Saturday night when film star Robert Pattinson, most famous for his role playing a forever-young teenage vampire Edward in the "Twilight" films, strolled in for dinner with friends while in town for the White House Correspondents Dinner. The Majestic is a cozy upscale diner on King Street in historic Alexandria, a suburb of Washington, D.C., in Virginia that specializes in comfort food. Pattinson, 25, a London native, mingled easily with the crowd at the bar while waiting for a table, according to Jennie Kuperstein, publicist for The Eat Good Food Group. Pattinson dined with four friends, ordering a steak—medium rare—prepared by Majestic Chef Shannon Overmiller and autographing a menu for Eve Armstrong, Chef Cathal Armstrong's 13-year-old daughter. The steak on the menu is described as "All Natural Virginia New York Strip Steak" which comes with fries and sells for $27. The Majestic was the go-to restaurant for a birthday dinner in July 2009 that included first lady Michelle Obama, her mother Marian Robinson and daughters Sasha and Malia. Pattinson will appear as Edward later this year when the last of the "Twilight" films, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn—Part 2," arrives in theaters Nov. 16, 2012. No word on whether actress Kristen Stewart, who plays opposite Pattinson in the Twilight films as Bella, and is reportedly seeing Pattinson, was in the entourage Saturday night. A special tour of the capital for Rob set up and sleep in Lincoln's bedroom perhaps? Whatever happened good to see him safely landed. Bitter sweet knowing this is the last time he plays Edward. JULIETTE BINOCHE TALKS ABOUT WORKING W/ ROBERT PATTINSON IN COSMOPOLIS

From Vanity Fair: Let’s talk about your upcoming David Cronenberg–directed film, Cosmopolis, which stars Robert Pattinson. What’s your role? I’m an art dealer. I only shot two days. The whole film takes place in a car. There are some scenes outside, but mostly it takes place in a limo. Cronenberg placed Robert on one seat, and I was the mover in the scene, so he let me improvise. It was fascinating to see how they would take time to light the car. It was like an art form almost, a painting. His [cinematographer], Peter Suschitzky, is very precise in that way. Robert was stunned to be taken by Cronenberg, because he didn’t think he could do it. But Cronenberg believed in him. It’s amazing—a director sometimes makes you do bigger things than you imagine. You need to have, like, a midwife to give birth. You need this midwife in order to grow, and imagine these new layers in yourself. [NEW] From ArtInfo I’ve seen a little bit of you in “Cosmopolis.” You’re in the car, wearing a little black dress, making out with Robert Pattinson. Who do you play? I play an art dealer who’s been a lover of Robert Pattinson’s character for a few years. Throughout the whole film she has this kind of sexual moment that Cronenberg always puts in his films. Then at the end she’s feeling alone and left out. I don’t know how long the scene is – maybe four minutes – but it’s like a lifetime, a relationship kind of starting and ending. Was it exciting working with Cronenberg? Yes, though it was only two days shooting. It’s always interesting wondering whether you’re being taken into a film, or whether you’re taking the director into it. When you work with great directors, you never know who starts it. Being stuck in a limo means you have to use your imagination. So Cronenberg played Robert in one spot and after that he let me do what I wanted, and when he was satisfied we stuck with that. He was precise language-wise, but otherwise he let me be, emotionally. It was good. SOURCE: RPLife
